fact
Ice needs more room
Freezing changes water’s arrangement as well as its state.
The same amount of water takes up more space after it freezes into ordinary ice.
Water molecules form an organized structure in ice that keeps them farther apart than in liquid water. The molecules themselves have not grown. This helps explain why expanding ice can disrupt plant tissues. It is a reason to follow suitable freezing-container guidance, not to try freezing a sealed rigid container.

Water expands on freezing because the organized ice structure holds its molecules farther apart than in liquid water.
