tip

Rinse before the peel or knife goes in

Even an uneaten skin is part of the preparation path.

Try this

Rinse fresh produce under running water before an adult cuts or peels it. Use clean equipment, and follow the package instructions for produce labeled prewashed or ready to eat.

Why it helps

A knife or peeling action can transfer material from the outside to the newly exposed surface.

When it applies

Use this when preparing apples, potatoes, cucumbers and other produce for cooking or an investigation.

Keep in mind

Do not add soap or detergent. Rinsing can reduce bacteria but does not remove every hazard, and it does not make spoiled produce usable.

Behind the explanation

  • FDA: Selecting and Serving Produce Safely ↗

Rinse produce under running water before cutting or peeling; do not use soap. Washing reduces but does not eliminate bacteria, and ready-to-eat prewashed produce does not need washing again.
