Prepare produce with a plan
Practice the order of rinsing, drying, stabilizing and preparing produce. The example is a whole cucumber; other foods and participants may need a different tool or role.

Step 1
Choose and inspect
An adult checks suitability and condition. Looking fresh cannot prove microbial safety. An adult selects the cucumber and checks its condition and suitability for the household. Reject rotten produce; the adult removes damaged areas as appropriate during preparation.
Step 2
Rinse before cutting
Rinse and rub the whole cucumber under plain running water before peeling or cutting. No soap on produce. Rub the whole cucumber under running water, using a clean produce brush for its firm surface. Rinse before peeling or cutting so the knife does not carry surface dirt inward.
Step 3
Dry and stabilize
Dry the cucumber and check the board before a knife is used. Keep the work back from the edge. Dry the cucumber with a clean towel. Set a clean board on a nonslip support away from the counter edge. Check that both the board and food can be controlled.
Step 4
Adult makes the first cut
Adult cuts lengthwise, then places a half flat-side down. The learner observes from a separate position. The adult trims and cuts the cucumber lengthwise using a suitable knife, then places a half flat-side down. The flat face helps prevent rolling during further adult cutting.
Step 5
Separate work from tasting
Use a clean container and the handling plan. An adult stores the knife and refrigerates pre-cut produce promptly. Move prepared pieces to a clean plate or suitable container. Use the chosen recipe or activity’s handling plan; a touched investigation sample is not automatically a snack.
If it feels tricky.
The cucumber keeps rolling.
Stop. Ask the adult to create and use a flat face before continuing.
The activity is not suitable for direct handling.
Use an observation, labeling or drawing role. The adult can demonstrate the entire preparation.
A small practice.
With an adult, rinse and dry one cucumber and prepare the board. Explain why washing comes before cutting. The adult may demonstrate one lengthwise cut while you observe from a separate position; further preparation follows the chosen recipe or experiment.
Go deeper
Washing reduces contamination but does not sterilize produce. Preparation also changes geometry: a flat base is easier to control than a round surface. The useful skill is choosing a stable setup and appropriate role, not finishing a cut quickly.
