tip
Match mass when the question needs equal amounts
A level spoon is useful, but equal volumes of different solids need not mean equal masses.
Try this
For a comparison that calls for equal ingredient mass, use a suitable kitchen scale and record the actual amounts. Keep each portion in its own labeled dish.
Why it helps
Different particle sizes and packing leave different amounts of air between pieces. Two equally full spoons can therefore contain different masses.
When it applies
Use this when comparing salt with sugar or checking the starting amount of differently shaped pieces.
Keep in mind
A scale still has limited resolution. Record its displayed precision and do not invent extra decimal places. Follow a recipe’s stated measurement method when making the recipe.
A reading record for your pathways. It does not certify a kitchen or a skill.

Behind the explanation
- American Chemical Society: Using Dissolving to Identify an Unknown ↗
Salt and sugar comparisons control mass, water amount, temperature and swirling; equal volumes of differently packed solids need not contain equal masses.
